Welcome to the GEOMAGIA50.v3 database

NEWS: 24.07.2017
Release of GEOMAGIA50.v3.2.

Major changes to version 3.2 of GEOMAGIA50:

(1) The inclusion of new and updated directional data from the UK and Ireland. 422 entries already in GEOMAGIA50.v3 were checked and updated where necessary and 487 new directional data were added to GEOMAGIA50. This work was done in collaboration with Cathy Batt (University of Bradford) and coworkers. This new dataset was used to created a temporally continuous spherical harmonic model of geomagnetic field changes over the UK and Ireland from 5000 BCE to 1990 CE. The model named ARCH-UK.1 is available through the "Archeomagnetic and volcanic query form". Predictions of all field components along with uncertainties can be produced for any location within the UK and Ireland.

Further details of the new British dataset can be found in Batt et al., 2017, Journal of Archaeological Science. Please cite this publication along with Brown et al., Earth Planets Space, 2015a, if you use British data or ARCH-UK.1 through GEOMAGIA50.

A log file noting all the changes made to updated British entries as well as useful information on the new British entries added to GEOMAGIA can be found here. Please also see the "Magnetic Moments in the Past Database" for further site and context information associated with British archaeomagnetic data.

To return all entries from the UK and Ireland enter "England,Scotland,Wales,Northern Ireland,Republic of Ireland,Isle of Man" into the Region/Country input box on the Archeomagnetic and volcanic query form.

(2) Over 2000 entries have been corrected for small errors. Some new entries have been added and some entries have been removed or partially removed. Click here for a log file listing the changes. This is the first installment of changes in an ongoing effort to improve the quality of the data within GEOMAGIA50.

Please cite the latest version of the database as GEOMAGIA50.v3.2 and add the date that you downloaded the data.

Minor Updates:

An additional search option has been added to the first panel of the archaeomagnetic and volcanic query, allowing the user to select whether entries constrained by archeomagnetic or palaeomagnetic dating are returned or not.

Three extra output columns have been included: Uploader, Editor and Last Edit Date.

Models CALS10k.2 and ARCH10k.1 (Constable et al, 2016) and HFM.OL1 (Panovska et al, 2015) can now be queried on the "Archeomagnetic and volcanic query form".

An error in plotting and outputing model uncertainties has been corrected.

The appearance of the plots has been improved.

NOTE: We would recommend using Google chrome as your browser. Firefox produces some quirky behaviour in the query form and other browsers have not been tested.
GEOMAGIA50 is an international collaboration to provide easy access to published archeomagnetic/volcanic and sediment paleomagnetic and chronological data for the past 50 ka. It has been funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF and the German Research Foundation (DFG) SPP 1488 and is or has been supported by the following institutions:

GFZ Potsdam, University of California San Diego, University of Freiburg, University of Liverpool and the University of Helsinki.

This web interface allows users to search the database by data type using chronological and geographical constraints.
Updates and Error Checking
Please check the log webpage for corrections and updates to the database.

Current update: 24th July 2017.
Previous update: 21st July 2015.

If you spot any errors in the database please contact Maxwell Brown (University of Iceland). We appreciate any user feedback on the database.
If you use this database please cite it. Two papers describing the functionality of GEOMAGIA50.v3 have now been published in Earth Planets Space. For queries made from 2015 onwards using the archeo/volcanic database please cite: For the sediment database please cite: For queries made prior to 2015 please cite:
Archeomagnetic and Volcanic Database
At present, the archeomagetic and volcanic database contains over 9000 entries of geomagnetic field directions and intensities.

The GEOMAGIA50 archeomagnetic/volcanic interface allows:
  • selecting and downloading archeomagnetic/volcanic data using various constraints.
  • calculating ARCH3k.1, CALS3k.4, CALS10k.1b, SED3k.1 and pfm9k.1a geomagnetic field model outputs for any location with the option to download the model output as text files. Descriptions of the models can be found here.
  • plotting data and models in time.
  • visualizing data using Google Earth.
Sediment Database
The sediment database currently contains approximately 45,000 individual (specimen/stratigraphic) level data entries from 52 locations, 5000 processed (averaged/smoothed) data entries from 19 locations, 450 radiocarbon ages from 38 locations and 640 general age data from 8 locations. More data will be added with time, so please revisit the database.

The GEOMAGIA50 sediment interface allows:
  • selecting, downloading and online viewing of sediment data using temporal and geographic constraints.
  • calculating and downloading SED3k.1, ARCH3k.1, CALS3k.4, CALS10k.1b and pfm9k.1a geomagnetic field model outputs based on the above constraints. Descriptions of the models can be found here.
If you have comments or suggestions feel free to contact Maxwell Brown (University of Iceland).
